Job Title:  Youth Development Worker
Salary:£24670 pro rata for 21 hrs per week  
Work pattern:Involves daytime, evening  and weekend work, funded until end August 2021
Base:YCSA, 48 Darnley Street / some home working may be required
Reports to:YCSA Manager

Background

Working as a collaborative partnership between YCSA (partnership lead agency), Glasgow Life, Community Renewal, Urban Roots and Govanhill Baths the Project will deliver a programme of youth engagement and informal learning activities aimed at young people form the Govanhill and Pollokshields areas who have disengaged from formal education or who are struggling with attending and attaining at school. The programme will be based around outdoor learning opportunities (whenever possible) delivered in the local community and in the school environment.  We will accredit the activities using the Community Achievement Awards, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the John Muir Award, the STEM-based CREST Award and the Dynamic Youth Awards and will be delivered both within and outwith school curriculum time.

Summary of Job Purpose

To develop and deliver a high quality service which provides individual, person-centred and group support empowering young people to engage in learning (formal and informal).  To work closely with the partner agencies to design and deliver services. To link with local secondary schools to ensure partnership working.  To ensure service outputs are delivered effectively and outcomes achieved.  To record outputs and outcomes required for monitoring and evaluation, and to contribute to final report.

PVG Scheme: The role requires the worker to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme if not already a member.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver appropriate, creative and engaging intervention programmes and effectively market, monitor and evaluate them
  • Develop opportunities for young people which focus on their learning, and personal development
  • Ensure all monitoring, recording systems and business processes are kept accurate and up to date at all times
  • To manage any sessional staff and volunteers involved in service delivery
  • Provide developmental support to encourage and empower young people to engage in activities that improve their life, aspirations and employability opportunities
  • Empower young people to identify barriers and overcome them through finding positive alternatives
  • Maintain personal development records of each young BME person registered into the YCSA service and prepare high quality reports quarterly, annually and on completion of programmes
  • Develop and maintain strong partnerships with project partners and schools and enhance the service referral process and pathways for young people
  • Maintain a working knowledge of YCSA and other organisational  services in order to refer service users to the most appropriate opportunity  and communicate effectively with both internal and external colleagues
  • Understand and abide by the policies of the organisation including Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Confidentiality, and Protection of Children and other vulnerable individuals
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by management

Background

YCSA has obtained funding from Scottish Government’s Communities Recovery Fund to provide the infrastructure for YCSA to recruit, support and train volunteers to both contribute to work with existing YCSA services providing a range of youthwork and skills development opportunities to Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) young people, and to volunteer with partner agencies to broaden opportunities for BME young people.

Summary of Job Purpose

To develop and deliver a high quality service which enables people to contribute and give back to society through volunteering; to provide opportunities for BME young people to develop their skills through volunteering; and to promote community  integration by offering opportunities to volunteer with people from  diverse backgrounds,  

PVG Scheme: The role requires the worker to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme if not already a member.

Responsibilities

  • To identify placement opportunities for volunteers within YCSA and for YCSA service users in suitable external venues in consultation with allocated development staff.
  • To recruit and support volunteers  to undertake groupwork delivery, mentoring and office administration
  • To communicate with  and provide information to staff / Programme Leads / Manager and Board of Trustees about the volunteering programme
  • To liaise with and be first point of contact for external volunteer placement providers
  • To provide induction to YCSA, ensure  understanding of and adherence to volunteer policy, organise volunteer meetings and celebrate volunteers.
  • To work with YCSA staff in the recruitment, retention, supervision and training of volunteers
  • To ensure all monitoring, recording systems and business processes are kept accurate and up to date at all times
  • To arrange PVG checks for all YCSA volunteers prior to starting work with young people/ vulnerable adults
  • Maintain personal development records for volunteers, ensuring data protection policies are followed
  • To understand and abide by the policies of the organisation including Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Confidentiality, and Protection of Children and other vulnerable individuals
  • Carry out any other duties as directed by management

YCSA has obtained funding from Scottish Government’s Communities Recovery Fund to employ a Digital Inclusion Officer to help Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) young people and their parents/carers get online and become more skilled in using digital tools, and to help YCSA staff and volunteers become better at using online tools to engage with BME young people.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and undertake 1:1 and group digital literacy training for BME young people and their parents/carers, to include online safety.
  • Identify digital solutions and training needs to develop the capacity of YCSA staff and volunteers to provide engaging online programmes.
  • Organise and manage online training events for service users and for staff/ volunteers.
  • Develop a pack to enable volunteers / staff joining YCSA to easily enhance digital skills and existing staff to sue as a refresher manual.
  • Support volunteers to take on roles using their digital skills.
  • Ensure all monitoring and recording systems associated with the role are kept accurate and up to date at all times.

Young People Looking Forward Programme Lead: (to work with 14-18 age group)

The Programme Lead is responsible for the management, development and delivery of the Young People Looking Forwardprogramme funded by BBC Children in Need

YCSA Young People Look Forward is a new project designed to work with Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) young people aged 14 -18 most impacted by lockdown, cancellation of exams, and disruption to their education. It is aimed to give them back hope for the future, increase confidence, widen their choices, develop soft skills needed for employability, and help prepare them for positive destinations in life beyond school.

YCSA Young People Look Forward will provide two main workstreams:

a) Groupwork programmes around employability and activity groups to develop confidence and soft skill.

b) Mentoring primarily carried out by volunteers from BME backgrounds who can provide young people with role models and help them widen their perspective on future possibilities.

The Programme Lead will be an experienced youth worker with experience of developing and managing projects. The Programme Lead will have the responsibility of providing strategic direction for the programme, with responsibilities for accurately reporting to funders in addition to monitoring and evaluation of the programme.  The Programme Lead will be responsible for managing a small team, made up of sessional staff and volunteers.  The Programme Lead will work closely with the YCSA Manager to seek appropriate funding for the development and continuation of the programme and to link the work with the development of YCSA’s strategic direction. 

Reports to: YCSA Manager

Safe, Happy and Confident Programme Lead: (to work with 16-25 age group)

Safe, Happy and Confident Development Worker: (to work with 16-25 age group)

Safe, Happy and Confident  will work with Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) young people including refugees/asylum seekers, aged 16-25, experiencing homelessness or insecure housing and with BME young offenders/ ex-offenders / those at risk of offending. The aim is to provide a safe nurturing space and supports that can enable young people to develop and achieve their potential, reaching positive destinations such as a stable home, college or employment.

Group activities will help overcome isolation, build skills and confidence and promote health and wellbeing – to include: music, photography, film, fun English language learning, in accordance with the young people’s needs/interests. Young people will receive 1:1 mentoring and coaching support as and when needed. Practical supports will include accompanying young people to appointments as required e.g. to homeless services.

Programme Lead – The Programme Lead will have the responsibility of providing strategic direction for the programme, with responsibilities for accurately reporting to funders in addition to monitoring and evaluation of the programme.  The Programme Lead will be responsible for managing a small team, made up of a Development Worker, sessional staff and volunteers. The team will deliver intensive one to one support and group programmes.  The Programme Lead will work closely with the YCSA Manager to seek appropriate funding for the development and continuation of the programme and to link the work with the development of YCSA’s strategic direction. 

Reports to: YCSA Manager

Development Worker – The role of the Development Worker is to support and empower young people from BME backgrounds to become active and valued members of society.  To develop and deliver a high quality service which provides  groupwork activities and 1:1 individual, person-centred support empowering young people to overcome disadvantage and reach positive destinations.  To ensure service outputs are delivered effectively and outcomes achieved.

Job Title: Sessional Outreach / Sessional Youth Worker
Salary:
£10 – £12 per hour (depending on experience)

Summary of Purpose of job

YCSA has a range of opportunities to employ sessional outreach and Youth Work staff.

The Outreach workers will undertake streetwork and use other opportunities to build relationships with vulnerable and difficult to reach young people, aged between 11-25, from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) backgrounds, encouraging them to access local resources such as those at YCSA and other appropriate support services.

The Youth Workers will support identified  young people through a range of groupwork  programmes delivered at the YCSA offices, developed around their interests e.g. arts, sports, music, tech .  Young people may include those at risk of / involved in, criminal justice services.

Applicants can apply for one or both aspects

Key duties & Responsibilities

  • Outreach – Carry out outreach work and make contact with BME young people who may be vulnerable or difficult to reach
  • Promote and make referrals to YCSA services and programmes
  • Ongoing mapping of the target areas
  • Development – Assist with the development and delivery of groupwork programmes with young people

Both roles

  • Establish relationships with young people in ways which will develop their trust, confidence and acceptance
  • Work in partnership with young people, local voluntary, statutory and specialist agencies to ensure young people can access appropriate support
  • Contribute to evaluation and provide regular reports and statistics on the work
  • Carry out other duties appropriate to the post and in line with requirements of the service
